USER

A USER is a device in the Polity story line used to prevent entry (or escape) into U-space by passing a singularity back and forth thruogh a runcible. Some extremely powerful ECS ships, such as Jerusalem and the dreadnought Cable Hogue are able to force passage though disrupted U-space with great effort and at the expense of severe damage and loss of life. The name USER is an acronym for UnderSpace infErence emmitteR. In the story "Alien Archeology" the ship Ulriss Fire encounters USER output leaving Paris station and reverted to real space after only 80 million km.
