Atheter

The Athether, who turn out to have degenerated into Gabbleducks, are an ancient race that abandoned technology and even sentience. They may have done this in an effort to survive the effects of Jain technology or as an act of incomprehensible nihilism. in the short story "Alien Archaeology" (Asimovs, June 2007) Jarel reunites a stolen Atheter memstore with a Gabbleduck in order to sell an intact Atheter to the Prador.1
