Artificial Intelligence, that is intelligent machines created by people or other machines, are central to all of the Polity stories. Since the Quiet Revolution, the "AI's" have been running the Polity. Earth Central, a single large computer governs the Polity. Runcible AI's are often planetary governors. AI's run space ships and stations. Many serve along side humans as the Polity's police and military forces. The distinction blurs when cloned humans serve as hosts to the subminds of Runcible AI's, and when humans use Augmentation-- computers connected to their brains-- to artificially enhance their own cognition.
